7 Basic Principles for Growing in God
By Kevin Shindoll – Link
1. Bible Reading
- Read the New Testament First
- I recommend the King James Version of the Bible. You can use other translations for reference.
- Endeavor to read the Bible through in the next 12 months. Reading only three chapters daily and five on Sunday will accomplish this goal. Approximately 15 minutes a day. Or you can use a One Year Bible or a Bread Chart.
- Commit to memory inspirational and salvation-related verses.
- Take your Bible with you to Church services. Find the verses that the minister cites.
2. Prayer
- Make Prayer a Daily Affair
- Pray with your family
- Develop the ability to pray at length. Do not be discouraged if you cannot at first, for this comes through practice, experience, and perseverance.
- Go to church early and pray before every service.
- God hears and answers prayer. Never be dismayed or doubtful if your prayers are not answered when and how you want them to be.
- Lookup passages of Scripture relating to prayer and obey them.
- In times of sickness, obey James5:13-18 by calling for the pastor and elders of the church to pray for you.
3. Fasting
Traditional Food Fast
- Fasting is simply doing without food, or both food and water for a period of time.
- Commit yourself to fast on regular basis. It is healthy both spiritually and physically.
- Occasionally go on extended fasts, that is more than one day at a time.
- When your pastor calls for a time of fasting, observe it if there is any way possible.
Other Recommendations for “Fasting”
- A Daniel Fast
- Media Fast
- Special Activity Fast – i.e hobbies etc …
4. Church Attendance
- Commit to one church. Do not run from church to church. (no church is perfect)
- Attend each regular service
- Attend each special service.
- Participate, worship, and get involved in the church service.
5. Invest
Invest Yourself – Get Involved
1. Witness
- Tell others what Christ has done for you
- Your greatest witness is the life you live
- Learn to teach a Bible Study
- Show a Christian spirit in your demeanor.
- Show friendliness to all guests in our services
2. Take an interest in the church property; help clean, paint, build, and so on.
3. There is something you can do. Pray, enquire and be diligent until you discover a way to be invloved.
4. Invest Your Finances
- Tithe
- Offering
- Missions
- Building Fund
6. Love the Ministry
-
Your pastor is your spiritual bishop (Acts20:28, ITimothy3:1-7).
-
Other ministers along with your pastor will dispenses piritual food for your soul’s growth. Receive it with thanksgiving.
-
Perfection and edification will come through the ministry of the Word of God.
-
God’s method for saving people and building their faith is the preaching of the Word of God.
-
Your pastor is set as a watchman for your soul (Ezekiel3:17-21, Acts20:28).
-
Obedience to your pastor is required as long as what he asks is scriptural and right.
-
Esteem and honor true and faithful ministers of the Gospel regardless of their age or position.
7. Build Relationships
1. With Sinners
- We are to “provide things honest in the sight of all men” (Romans 12:17)
- If your friends or family are unsaved, endeavor to lead them to Christ by living a holy and godly life before them.
- God’s people should be the light of the world and the salt of the earth; conduct yourself accordingly.
2. With Saints
- Be an example to other believers (1 Timothy 4:12-16).
- Observe the example of other believers (Titus 2:1-5, I Peter 5:3).
- Expand your circle of friends; have fellowship with all the saints.
- Become a peacemaker, endeavor for peace (Matthew 5:9, Hebrews 12:14).
